The Trials of Tangerine
I was newly engaged. I had showers and parties to attend. It was the spring of 2001 (pre 9/11), the economy was booming, everyone was looking forward, and pink was the color of the season.
In the blissful state I was in, how could I not participate in the biggest summer trend? And I was not just going to participate, I was going to “wow”.
To this day I’m not really a shoe girl, never having owned a pair of Louboutins or Manolos. I’m more of a Nike, Cole-haan, practical but cute and comfy shoe girl myself. But at the time Sex and the City was on TV, I had parties to attend, and I knew what it was that would make my life complete. A pair of pink Gucci slides with a kitten heel.
I wore those shoes faithfully through the season and enjoyed every moment. But here’s the thing, they are still in my closet and I haven’t worn them since. To me they look “So 2001”.
I know this because the following year, spring 2002, the color of the season was lime green. True to form, I spent the better part of 3 months eyeing a green Gucci handbag with the horse bit buckle, thankful now that I didn’t pull the trigger.
Tangerine is all the rage for spring/summer 2012, and a great color it is! So buy a cute orange sundress, or tangerine tank top, pair of cropped pants, or tangerine heels but I warn you against an “investment piece” in tangerine.
Kudos to one of my new friends who wore tangerine with perfection, not over the top, but right on trend. Black cropped pants, a tangerine tank and a cute jacket on top.
My closet has seen many pairs of shoes come and go, but those pink Gucci slides are still there. I still hold out hope; maybe spring 2013 will be the year pink is back in.
