Challenging Coco Chanel

Chanel famously said, “When accessorizing always take off the last thing you put on.” She was referring to women who wore a few to many accessories, and suggested that the removal of a bracelet, necklace or other would enhance the look.  This continues to be excellent advice for those who over accessorize.

However, sometimes less is more and sometimes less is less. Today, I see more under accessorizing than over accessorizing going on. Jeans and a long sleeve Tee look great to run around town in, but throw on a chunky necklace or some big hoop earrings & the look jumps up several notches.

In a post-recession era, many of us have the feeling that we don’t want it to look like “too much” or “over the top”, so instead we settle for less or none.  No more!!! A great necklace, handbag or bracelet is always a welcome addition to any ensemble.

This does not have to be an expensive endeavor, and the jewelry you buy doesn’t have to last forever. One of my favorite places to buy jewelry is a spa/beauty salon. For $17 you can buy a funky necklace, enjoy it for the season, add some spunk to your outfit and feel good.  My feeling is that if the piece is less expensive than dinner, you too can be done with it at the end of the evening.

Also, let’s face it, that extra piece of jewelry makes us feel just a little better, a little more dressed, a little more finished and a little more ready to go out.  There’s no downside.

With the utmost admiration for Chanel, I would like to respectfully disagree and suggest “When going out, always put on an accessory before you leave.”

It’s worth the extra trip up the stairs.

I especially love the advice to buy something at the salon or spa. Usually those pieces are handmand and one of a kind. So not only do you look fabulous, you are supporting a local artist as well!

That is why I go to Emils for my cut/color. I love Hanan.

I couldn’t agree more Mara!! Sometimes just
throwing on an old tank top and jeans can look
great with some really inexpensive jewelry.
So many places around town to buy really cute
stuff that will enhance any outfit. You have the
    best advice Mar!!

As always, a fantastic post! And SO true. Sometimes I am amazed what I will and won’t spend $17 on. You make perfect sense. Come to NYC for great street jewels!
